Sleep Apnea Q & A

What is sleep apnea?

With sleep apnea, your breathing is interrupted during sleep, which causes you to wake up gasping for air. Obstructive sleep apnea is another form of this condition that happens when something blocks your upper airway, such as a large tongue.

If you're experiencing sleep apnea, Dr. Atli can examine your mouth and throat to see if the shape of your jaw or tongue might be interfering with your sleep.

Some symptoms of sleep apnea can include:

  • Daytime tiredness
  • A sore throat or dry mouth when you wake up
  • Headaches
  • Restlessness during sleep

Why is it important to treat sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea can cause tiredness during the day and memory loss without treatment. In more severe cases, this extreme fatigue can result in workplace injuries or a deadly car accident.

Sleep apnea also increases your risk of more severe health problems that have been linked to restlessness, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

To diagnose sleep apnea, Dr. Atli can recommend a “sleep study:” You will spend the night in a sleep lab where your breathing and sleep patterns are measured. Dr. Atli then receives a report detailing what causes the sleep apnea and can discuss dental treatments that can resolve the problem.

What treatments are effective for sleep apnea?

One such treatment option is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which improves your breathing during sleep. Customized night guards are also effective.

Night guards tilt your jaw forward to keep your airway open. This device fits in your mouth just like a sports mouth guard or an orthodontic retainer. There are many mouth guards available, and Dr. Atli will choose the one that’s right for you.
